Inauguration of Panama Metro Line 2: a flagship project for CIM

15/05/2019 - cimgroup.com

On 26th April 2019, the Grupo de Empresas (GdE) consortium , which includes Alstom, Thales, Sofratesa, TSO and CIM, proceeded to the commercial commissioning of the second Panama subway line inaugurated the day before by the President of the Panamanian Republic.

With a length of 21 kilometres and 16 stations, line 2 will be able to carry up to 40,000 passengers per hour and will offer a fast and secure transportation option.

Constructed in a record breaking 43 months, Panama Metro Line 2 represents an important step forward in the city's urban mobility infrastructure. It is part of the overall Panama Metro project to build a network of 8 lines by 2040. For this project, CIM is designing, manufacturing and installing the workshop equipment necessary for the maintenance of trains and, through its Panamanian subsidiary, TCP Rail, employing more than 500 workers, to carry out the track and catenary installation work.

CIM already successfully completed work on the first line of the Panama metro, which was commissioned in February 2014, enabling the transport of more than 200,000 passengers per day, whilst working closely with the Panamanian Ministry of Education in the construction of a professional maintenance training centre. Since 2014, TCP Rail has maintained the track, catenary and the line 1 depot equipment, therefore becoming a major player in rail maintenance in Panama and in the region.

Following the construction of the Metro de Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, the Metro de Panama line 1 and the first tramway in Latin America in Cuenca (Ecuador), « this project strengthens the presence of CIM in this region and reaffirms its strong added value and international dynamism in the railway sector », said Alain LOVAMBAC, CEO of CIM.
